No peace till India and Pakistan solve the Kashmir problem
The Maharaja of Kashmir could not decide the fate of Kashmir state in 1947 and till he could decide, a big part of Kashmir had been occupied by Pakistan and when he got help from the side of India, it was too late, and somehow the matter went to UN which passed resolution for immediate stoppage of war between the armies and also gave directions to both India and Pakistan. India could not decide to agree for plebiscite in Kashmir and Pakistan did not handed over occupied area of Kashmir. So the problem remained there and there had been no change since that date. It happened in January, 1949.
Pakistan wanted whole of Kashmir and this desire is still alive in the mind of Pakistan and on the other hand India believes that since the state had been handed over to India, it is part of India and it wants to have back occupied area of Kashmir. Pakistan says that the population of Kashmir is mostly Muslims, therefore, it must be added to Pakistan. So if there had been war of 1965, that was for occupation of remaining part of Kashmir and if there is indirect war through terrorist, that too is for the occupation of remaining part of Kashmir.
We the people of India do not believe in the fact that since most of the people in Kashmir are Muslims, therefore, this part should go to Pakistan. We are a secular country and we are have a large number of Muslims here in India and they are living a free and progressive life here. As per law also Kashmir is part of India and therefore, it must come to India and Pakistan must leave the area of Kashmir occupied in 1947-48. And on this point there had been talks between India and Pakistan and those talks could not succeed. There shall be no choice but ultimately we shall have to accept the division already effected in early years. Both the countries must accept this division and the present line of control must be converted into international border between the two countries. That is the only solution. The people on both parts have already started living as citizen of those countries. It shall be difficult to ask those living in occupied Kashmir to become part of India and similarly the people of this part of Kashmir shall not like to go to Pakistan. If we give option to Muslims living in India to migrate to Pakistan none shall give his option for migration and keeping in view this aspect of human life, we must accept the division and must end all disputes.
This aspect may be discussed in the parliaments of both the countries and they must decide this matter once for all because during all the past years we had been fighting direct or indirect wars and we had been losing much and all such wars had been futile exercises. Therefore, for complete peace, this is the only solution. So the people through their representatives in the August Houses must decide the fate without any further delay. Dalip Wasan.
